Petrol and diesel prices in India

Petrol and diesel prices in India have been hiked significantly by ₹2.61 per litre and ₹2.71 per litre respectively today, Monday, May 25, 2026. This marks the fourth fuel price increase in less than two weeks, bringing the cumulative rate hike to nearly ₹7.5 per litre since regular price revisions resumed on May 15. The sharp surge is driven by skyrocketing global crude oil prices, a weakening Indian rupee, and intense geopolitical disruptions stemming from the US-Iran conflict and shipping halts in the crucial Strait of Hormuz.

Current Fuel Rates Across Major Metros (Per Litre)

Fuel prices vary across states due to different local value-added taxes (VAT) and freight charges:

  • Delhi: Petrol has crossed the ₹100 mark, sitting at ₹102.12 (+₹2.61), while Diesel has reached ₹95.20 (+₹2.71).
  • Mumbai: Petrol is priced at ₹111.21 (+₹2.72) and Diesel is at ₹97.83 (+₹2.81).
  • Kolkata: Petrol has climbed to ₹113.51 (+₹2.87) and Diesel is at ₹99.82 (+₹2.80).
  • Chennai: Petrol stands at ₹107.77 (+₹2.46) and Diesel has reached ₹99.55 (+₹2.57).

Timeline of the Recent Price Shocks

The abrupt end to a multi-year pricing freeze has triggered rapid successive hikes this month:

  • May 15: Prices initially jumped by a steep ₹3.00 per litre.
  • May 19: A secondary upward revision of 90 paise per litre was applied.
  • May 23: Rates rose further by 87 paise for petrol and 91 paise for diesel.
  • May 25 (Today): The highest individual spike yet of up to ₹2.71 per litre took effect.

Private fuel providers have aligned their rates with public sector Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs). Companies like Nayara Energy and Jio-bp have revised pump costs upward to match state-run counters, having already absorbed massive daily losses over the initial months of the West Asia crisis.
